What do you like most about B2?
I like having a positive impact on the business I manage, the most. B2 has given me the opportunity to autonomously provide solutions and support to an array of clients. I take a holistic but individual approach to fit my clients’ needs, and it works. B2 provides that platform and supports its accountants to take action and be the change.
What is your favorite quote, motto or personal mantra?
“If you really want to do something, you’ll find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse.” – Jim Rohn
What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
As a recent college graduate in accounting, I shouldn’t have any other answer than, to be a CPA! BUT… If I wasn’t working as an accountant, I would be doing home renovations and interior design. I enjoy elevating a space with colors and textures and tearing things down to rebuild something new. I recently helped a friend update her kitchen, just the two of us; we became regulars at Home Depot and Floor and Décor. The kitchen turned out fantastic! She didn’t want to trust anyone else with her home project, so I hope that speaks to my level of skill and design.
What charities or organizations do you love supporting, and why?
I started volunteering at a very young age. My best friend’s mother, Susan would take us to El Buen Samaritano for their Christmas present drive and distribution. We would volunteer from the time we were 9 to 12 years old, to organize and set up the presents for the families. This stuck with me for the rest of my adult life. I’ve spent time volunteering more than once with Coasts for Kids, HEB Feast of Sharing, Habitat for Humanity, Junior Achievement, Caritas of Austin, and Texas Humane Heroes.
While all of these organizations have an impact on the community, my time spent volunteering at Caritas of Austin moved me in a special way. This organization’s mission is to prevent and end homelessness for people in greater Austin. The times I have volunteered at Caritas, I worked to prepare and distribute their lunch service. This isn’t exclusionary to just the homeless community, anyone can drop in for a hot meal. I spoke with people from all walks of life, in transitionary periods, in-between jobs, homeless, in-between paychecks, and people who were just working in the area. Caritas of Austin opened their doors to feed everyone who walked in, with no hesitation. I love that this organization does what they can with the resources they have, for the people we often overlook.
Tell us a little bit about your family.
I was born in Laredo, Texas to an immigrant mother from Mexico and my father who is from south Texas. Mom is an educator, graduated from the University of Texas, and spent her life teaching science and ESL. My father graduated from Texas A&M University, magna cum laude with a degree in Accounting and devoted his professional life to the Union Pacific Railroad; both of my parents recently retired before they were 60. My older sister and younger brother are both mechanical engineers. My sister graduated from the University of Texas and my brother, the University of Houston. Buffy, my sister is expecting her first child, so we are ecstatic to welcome the first baby into our family! I recently adopted the most adorable French Bulldog, her name is Nutmeg. She is two years old, loves long walks to the park, and high-fives when she does a good job! We spend plenty of time together working from home. She’ll be an accountant in no time!
